    안녕하세요 Chris입니다.

     

    해리포터 원서읽기를 도전하시는 분들을 위해! 또는 재미로 처음 영어원서를 읽기를 도전하시는분들을 위해 저번 포스팅에 이어서 해리포터 원서읽기를 통한 어휘 공부를 계속 시작하겠습니다.

     

    이번포스팅은 저번 포스팅 (Chapter 1) 에 이어서 포스팅이라 Chapter 2 에나온 단어들을 나열하였습니다.

    제가 읽으면서 생소한 단어들이나 아주 기본적인 단어가 아닌 위주로 뽑아서 정리 했습니다. 아무래도 책을 읽을때 단어를 모르거나하면 막히는 경우가 있기에.....자꾸막히다보면 책을 읽는데 흥미를 잃기 쉽상입니다. 먼저 제 포스팅을 보신후에 책으로 넘어가서 읽으시거나 책을 먼저 한번 보신후에 제 포스팅으로 복습을 하는 방법을 추천드립니다.

     

    Chapter 1 에서는 해리의 태생과 어떻게 Dursley가족과 살게되는지 전개내용이었는데요, Chapter 2 에서는 해리의 어린시절 이야기 부터 시작됩니다.

    Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    Chapter two

     

    Brass (Countable noun): Brasses are flat pieces of brass with writing or a picture cut into them 황동으로 만든 장식패를 의미합니다.

    Example

    "The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursley’s front door." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "a brass plate on the door"

     

    Mantelpiece (n): a structure of wood, marble, or stone above and around a fireplace. 벽난로

    Example

    "Only the photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "On the mantelpiece are a pair of bronze Ming vases."

     

    Bonnet (n): A bonnet is a hat with ribbons that are tied under the chin. Bonnets are now worn by babies. 아기들이쓰는 끈을 턱 밑에서 묶는 모자 입니다.

    Example

    "There had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-coloured bonnets." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     

    Carousel (n): A carousel is a large circular machine with seats, often in the shape of animals or cars. 회전목마

    "…now the photographs showed a large blond boy riding hish first bicycle, on a carousel at the fair,…." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     

    Shrill (adj): A shrill sound is high-pitched and unpleasant 날카로운 소리 

    "…and it was her shrill voice that made the first noise of the day." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "Mary Ann's voice grew shrill."

     

    Rap on (v): If you rap on something or rap it, you hit it with a series of quick blows. 톡 두드리다

    "His aunt rapped on the door again." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "A guard raps his stick on a metal hand rail."

     

    Knobbly (adj): Something that is knobbly or knobby has lumps on it which stick out and make the surface uneven  울퉁불퉁한

    "Harry had a thin face, knobbly knees, black hair, and bright green eyes." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     "...potatoes that are very knobbly and difficult to peel."

     

    Wolfing down (v): To eat something greedily 게걸스럽게 먹다

    "began wolfing down his bacon as fast as possible" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "I grabbed the hamburger and wolfed it down in 30 seconds."

     

    Leap (v): A leap a large and important change, increase, or advance; a rise, a jump 뛰다 

    "…but, Harry’s heart gave a leap"- Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone (놀라서 잠시 심장이 엄췄다 라고 해석해면될것같습니다.)

    "The result has been a giant leap in productivity."

     

    Snarl (v): If you snarl something, you say it in a fierce, angry way (기분이 나빠) 으르렁거리듯 말하다

    " 'And come back and find the house in ruins?' she snarled." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "I vaguely remember snarling at someone who stepped on my foot."

     

    Wail (v): If someone wails, they make long, loud, high-pitched cries which express sorrow or pain 울부짖다, 투덜거리다 (한국영화 중에 곡성을 보신분 만들 텐데, 곡성영화 영어로 "The Wailing" 입니다.)

    "….if he screwed up his face and wailed, his mother would give him anything he wanted." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "...a mother wailing for her lost child. "

     

    Fling (v) fling a part of your body in a particular direction, especially your arms or head, you move it there suddenly 몸이나 신체일부를 던지다, 내밀다

    "…..she cried, flinging her arms around him" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "She flung her arms around my neck and kissed me."

     

    Shear off (v)  to remove (something) with great force 힘것 잘라내다, 없애다

    "….as it had been before Aunt Petunia had sheared it off" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "The impact of the crash sheared off the airplane's wing."

     

    Beet (n): Beets are dark red roots that are eaten as a vegetable.

    "….yelled at Harry, his face like a gigantic beet with a mustache…" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    Snigger (v): If someone sniggers, they laugh quietly in a disrespectful way 키득거리다

    "Dudley and Piers sniggered" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "After all the years, it wasn't the fear of failure, rather what I was afraid most was people sniggering behind my back"

     

    Slither (v): If you slither somewhere, you slide along in an uneven way (매끄럽다게) 스스로 기어가다

    "…snakes were crawling and slithering over bits of wood and stone." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "Robert lost his footing and slithered down the bank."

     

    Glistening (v): If something glistens, it shines, usually because it is wet or oily 반짝이는

    "….,staring at the glistening brown coils." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "The calm sea glistened in the sunlight."

    Smartly (adj): 거세게, 엄하게, 가혹하게

    "Uncle Vernon rapped the glass smartly with his knuckles," - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     

    Beady (adj): Beady eyes are small, round, and bright 구슬같이 빛나는 작은 눈

    "The snake suddenly opened its beady eyes." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "I was totally drawn to her sparkly beady eyes."

     

    Vigorously (adv): in a way that involves physical strength, effort, or energy; strenuously 발랄하게

    "The snake nodded vigorously" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    "she shook her head vigorously"She shivered and rubbed her arms vigorously."

     

    Constrictor 먹이를 졸라 죽이는 큰 뱀

    Jab: 뾰족한것으로 (뾰족한 것으로 쿡) 찌르다,

    "The boa constrictor jabbed its tail at the sign again…" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     

    Deafening 귀청이 터질 듯한

    "….a deafening shout behind Harry made…" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    The chirping noise of the birds was deafening (새가 지져기는 소리에 귀가 먹먹했다.)

     

    Waddling 뒤뚱뒤뚱 걷다

    "Dudley came waddling toward them…." - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    Her walk is waddling, like that of a duck (그녀의 걸음걸이는 뒤뚱뒤뚱 오리와 같다.)

     

    Uncoiling (둥글게 감긴것을) 풀다

    "The great snake was uncoiling itself rapidly,…" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

     My dad uncoiled the tangled rope (아버지가 꼬여진 밭줄을 풀었다.)

     

    Gibber (흔히 공포에 질려) 횡설수설하다

    "Piers and Dudley could only gibber" - Harry Poter Sorcerer's Stone

    I was gibbering when I was having a nightmare (악몽을 꾸고 있을때 나는 횡설수설 말했다.)
