    #안녕하세요 Chris입니다.

     

    영어를 공부하시는 분들 해리포터로 많이들 처음으로 원서 접하실 거예요. 아무래도 영어공부를 꾸준히 하신 분들은 해리포터 원서 읽으시는데 많은 어려움이 없을 거라 생각합니다.

    그러나, 단어가 부족하신 분들을 위해 오늘 보터 해리포터 원서 읽기 도전하신 분들을 위해! 제가 해리포터 1편부터 단어 정리를 해서 블로그 포스팅을 하도록 하겠습니다 :)

     

    해리포터 원서읽기

    아무래도 20대 30대 분들은 해리포터를 영화관에서 봐왔던 기억이 새록새록 나실 건데요.... 저도 초등학교 때 친구들과 처음 해리포터를 보러 갔던 기억이 나네요. 영화를 보셨던 본들은 특히 원서 읽기가 더움 쉬울 거라 예상합니다 (아마 이 글 보시는 분들은 한번쯤은 다 보셨겠죠?.... 제발 보셨기를......^^).

     

    저도 책을 꾸준히 읽고 있긴 하지만 소설은 잘 안 읽는 편이라 이번 기회를 통해서 재미를 붙일 겸 여러분께 단어 공부에 도움이 되고자 이번 블로그 포스팅 주제를 정했습니다. 꼭 원서 꾸준히 읽으시고 포기하지 마세요!

     

    공부방법은 여러 가지이지만 두 가지 방법을 알려드리자면, 먼저 밑에 있는 단어를 보시고 (조금 애매한 단어나 어려운 단어만 뽑아서 적었습니다) 먼저 숙지를 하신 후에 한 챕터 한챕터 넘겨보시거나, 먼저 한챕터 또는 두 챕터를 보시고 제 블로그 포스팅을 보시고 이해를 하시는 걸 추천해 드려요. 물론 본인의 독해 방법이 계신 분은 본인 마음대로!

    CHAPTER ONE - The Boy Who Lived

     

    Beefy (adj): [informal] muscular or robust - 우람한, 뚱뚱한

    Example:

    "He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck,...." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "He shrugged his beefy shoulders."

    Synonym: muscular, brawny, hefty, well-built, strong, solid, heavy, robust

     

    Shudder (v): (of a person) tremble convulsively, typically as a result of fear or revulsion - (공포추위 등으로) 몸을 떨다, 몸서리치다, 전율하다

    Example:

    "The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if the Potters arrived in the street."(Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "She still shuddered at the thought of him."

    Synonym: Shake, shiver, tremble, quiver, vibrate

     

    Hum (v): to sing with the lips closed and without uttering speech sounds distinctly - 콧노래를 부르다, 흥얼거리다

    Example:

    "Mr Dursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "I've forgotten how that song goes - could you hum it for me?"

    "She was humming a merry little tune"

     

    Flutter(v): (of a bird or other winged creature) fly unsteadily or hover by flapping the wings quickly and lightly - (빠르고 가볍게) 흔들(리)다[펄럭이다/떨다]

    Example:

    "None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the window." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "a couple of butterflies fluttered around the garden"

    Synonym: flit, hover

     

    Chortle (v): [written] to laugh, showing pleasure and satisfaction - (기쁘거나 재미있어서) 깔깔거리다

    Example:

    "Little tyke, " chortled Mr. Dursley as he left the house." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "She chortled with glee at the news"

    "There was silence for a moment, then Larry began chortling."

    Synonym: laugh, chuckle, giggle

     

    Peculiar (adj): different to what is normal or expected, sometimes in an unpleasant way:; strange, special - 이상한[기이한], 특유한[고유한/독특한]

    Example:

    "he noticed the first sign of something peculiar - a cat reading a map." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "he gave her some very peculiar looks"

    "It's peculiar that they didn't tell us they were going away."

    Synonym: strange, unusual, odd

     

    Jerk (v):  to make a short sudden movement, or to cause someone or something to do this - 홱 움직이다

    Example:

    "he jerked his head around to look again." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "he raised his chin and jerked his neck as if his collar were too tight."

     

     

    Enraged (adj): very angry; furious - 격분하여

     

    "Mr Dursley was enraged to see that a couple of them...." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "He was enraged at the article about him."

     

    Clutch (v): grasp (something) tightlyto take or try to take hold of something tightly, usually in fear, worry, or pain -(꽉) 움켜잡다

    Example:

    "It was on his way back past them, clutching a large doughnut in a bag...."(Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "He collapsed, clutching his stomach."

     

    Dash back: Run back to where you came from - 황급히 돌아가다

    Example:

    "He dashed back across the road, hurried up to this office..." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "He dashed bI realized I forgot my books. I dashed back home to get them."

     

    Grunt (v): (of a person) to make a short, low sound instead of speaking, usually because of anger or pain - 앓는소리를 내다 (특히 아프거나 짜증스럽거나 흥미가 없어서 내는 소리)

    Example:

    "he grunted, as the tiny old man stumbled and almost fell." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    " he hauled himself over the wall, grunting with the effort."

     

    Rattled (adj): worried or nervous - 난처한, 당황하다

    Example:

    "He was rattled." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "Walter got rattled when they didn’t call."

     

    Stern (adj): very serious or strict, severe, or showing disapproval - 엄중한, 근엄한

    Example:

    "It just gave him a stern look." (그 고양이가 stern look) (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    " The protestors received a stern warning not to go anywhere near the White House."

     

    Peer (v): If you peer at something, you look at it very hard, usually because it is difficult to see clearly - 자세히 들여다보다, 응시하다, 주의해서 보다

    Peer down (ph): to look quickly down/ looking at something from high above.

    Example:

    "Mr Dusley crept to the bedroom windown and peered down into the front garden." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "I had been peering at a computer print-out that made no sense at all. "

     

    Quiver (v): tremble or shake with a slight rapid motion - (가볍게) 떨다[떨리다]

    Example:

    "It didn't so much as quiver when a car door slammed on the next street, nor when two owls swooped overhead" (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "the tree's branches stopped quivering"

    Synonym: Tremble, shake, shiver

     

    Twitch (v): give or cause to give a short, sudden jerking or convulsive movement - 씰룩거리다, 경련하다

    Example:

    "The cat's tail twiched and its eyes narrowed."  (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "her lips twitched and her eyelids fluttered"

     

    Rummage (v): search unsystematically and untidily through something - 수색하다, 뒤적거리다

    Example:

    "He was busy rummaging in his cloack...." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "he rummaged in his pocket for a handkerchief"

    Synonym: Search through, go trhough

     

    Flicker (v): (of light or a source of light) shine unsteadily; vary rapidly in brightness - 빛이 깜박거리다

    Example:

    "the next lamp flickered into darkness" (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "the interior lights flickered, and came on"

     

    Pinpricks (n): a prick caused by a pin - 아주 작은 지점(특히 불빛이 비치는 곳)

    Example:

    "...until the only lights left on the whole street were two tiny pinpricks in the distance,...." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

     

    Tabby: a grey or brownish cat - 얼룩무늬 고양이

    Example:

    "he turned to smile at the tabby..." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

     

    Ruffled (adj): affected by a loss of calmness or composure; unsettled or disturbed -(사람의 마음을) 산란하게 만들다, 평정심을 잃게 되다

    Example:

    "she looked distinctly ruffled." (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "… he is reserved and gracious, though gets a bit ruffled when asked about things he considers too personal …"

     

    Downright (adj): you use downright to emphasize unpleasant or bad qualities or behaviour - (부정적이거나 불쾌한 것을 강조하여) 순전한 (완전한)

    "people are downright careless on the street" - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    There was suspicion and even downright hatred between them.
    (그들 사이에는 의혹과 심지어 더할 수 없는 증오심까지 있었다)

     

     

    Exasperate (v): irritate and frustrate (someone) intensely-  몹시 화나게 (짜증하게) 하다

    Example:

    "....,sounding half exasperated, half admiring"  (Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone)

    "this futile process exasperates the employees"

    Tremble (v): shake involuntarily, typically as a result of anxiety, excitement, or frailty - (가볍게) 흔들리다[떨리다

    Example: 

    "Professor McGonagall's voice trembled as she went on." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "Isobel was trembling with excitement"

     

    Glumly: responding in a disappointed or unhappy way - 무뚝뚝하게, 침울하게

    Example:

    "Dumbledore nodded glumly." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    'll never find another job at my age," she said glumly."

     

    Falter (v): lose strength or momentum - 자신감 부족으로 걸음이나 행동이) 흔들리다[머뭇거리다]

    Example:

    "Its - it's true?" faltered Professor McGonagall." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "The faltering economy has affected the new party's popularity."

     

    Dab (v): If you dab something, you touch it several times using quick, light movements - (보통 여러 번 가볍게) 만지다[누르다], 토닥거리다

    Example:

    "...dabbed at her eyes beneath her spectables" - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "She arrived weeping, dabbing her eyes with a tissue."

     

    Grudgingly: in a reluctant or resentful manner - 마지못해, 억지로

    Example:

    "....said Professor McGonagall grudgingly." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "I grudgingly accepted his apology"

     

    Astride: you sit or stand with one leg on each side of it - 양쪽으로 두 다리를 벌리고

    Example:

    it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "he was sitting astride the bike"

     

    Murmur (v): say something in a low or indistinct voice - 속삭이다, 소곤거리다, 중얼[웅얼]거리다

    Example:

    "Nina murmured an excuse and hurried away"

    "Julie turned over and murmured in her sleep."

     

    Ruffle (v): to make a smooth surface uneven - 헝클다

    Example:

    "a breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which...." - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "A light wind ruffled the water."

     

    Hushed (adj): A hushed voice or hushed conversation is very quiet - (아무도 말을 하지 않아서) 조용한, (보통 때보다 더) 고요한

    Example:

    "....and saying in hushed voices...."  - Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

    "We discussed the situation in hushed whispers."
